Although separate municipalities, Rockport and Fulton share heritage, business and recreational areas. Abundant access is available to saltwater recreational opportunities.
Rockport was established in 1867 as a shipping point for wool, hides, bones and tallow. It became the Aransas County seat in 1871.
Fulton was settled in 1866 and named for George Ware Fulton. Coleman-Fulton Pasture Co. ranched in the area and promoted efforts toward a deep-water pass and railroads to market their beef. It is now a tourist community.
The jetty sheltering Rockport Yacht Basin is a popular spot for bay fishing. Group-boat bay fishing is available at the yacht basin. Many hotels and motels on the bayfront maintain private fishing piers for guests. A wide array of professional fishing guides also are available for charters.
Rockport-Fulton is a popular place for outdoor activities. A number of parks are available including Memorial Park and the Community Aquatic & Skate Park. New attractions and nature trails are being developed. A mobile app is available, call 361/729-6445; www.aransaspathways.com. Rockport-Fulton also lies along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
