This community was founded in 1846 by the families of Daniel and Moritz Lehman, who arrived from Prussia. Other German families settled in the area a decade later. In 1931, local children renamed the community, which was then called Hilbigville, in honor of Knute Rockne, the famous Notre Dame University football coach who died in a plane crash that year.
