Town grew from early Spanish settlement once protected by a presidio (fort). It is Texas' most mountainous area, averaging more than 5,000 feet above sea level, with some spots above 8,000 feet. Home to the only legal border crossing between El Paso and Del Rio. Mexican town south of the river is Ojinaga.
