The name is Spanish for "Land of Flowers"--chosen for the blooming meadows along Vince's Bayou. The bayou figured prominently in the Battle of San Jacinto. The town began with a rural post office in 1900, mushroomed into a bustling residential suburb and continued to grow with Houston. It is the home of San Jacinto Junior College and Texas Chiropractic College.
