Founded in 1923, the town got a post office and became the seat of Cochran County in 1924. Today, it is a banking, market and shipping center for the county. Products include petroleum, cotton, cattle and feed.
Visitors can look in on ranch operations at the C.C. Slaughter Ranch, once the headquarters of a cattle baron who established a ranching empire. Two miles south on Texas 214; one mile west on F.M. 1169 (not shown on most maps).
