As with many towns on the prairie, it was founded as a station in 1882 when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad was built through Shackelford County. It was first named Hulltown after Swope Hull, its first merchant, and was renamed Hicks in 1891. The town's current name honors John J. Moran, president of the railroad in 1892.
