Settlement of this town dates from the 1840s. The gristmill established by R.S. Man and Julian Feild in the late 1850s formed the center of town and provided meal and flour for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The prospering community that had grown around the Man and Feild mill took on the blended name of "Mansfeild," but repeated misspellings over the years resulted in the acceptance of the conventional spelling of Mansfield.
A self-guided walking tour of several historic homes begins at the Mansfield Historical Museum and Heritage Center. The historic downtown area is one of the oldest intact business districts in Tarrant County and now is home to a variety of shopping and entertainment options. The city also features 11 parks and the 18-hole Mansfield National Golf Club.
Events include the Historic Mansfield Music Festival, Pecan Festival, Historic Mansfield Arts Festival and Hometown Holiday Parade.
