The seat of Gregg County, the town was settled in the early 1800s and was rapidly developed by planters from the Old South after 1850. Longview was named by railroad surveyors impressed by long-distance view from the top of Rock Hill. The discovery of oil in the 1930s more than tripled the population of 6,000. The city is home to Le Tourneau University.
