This community arose where the Old Buffalo Trail, later known as La Bahia Road, crossed the Colorado River. Developed in 1831, the city became the seat of Fayette County in 1837. The county and town are said to be named by early settlers for their hometown and county in Tennessee. The "Historic Oak" on the north side of the square was a muster point for men in six conflicts.
