On the north bank of the Guadalupe River, the city was founded in 1883 by J.C.W. Ingram, who built a store and conducted church services there. The "new" section was started in 1936 after a disastrous flood. It is a trade center for surrounding summer camps for both boys and girls, and vacation and retirement homes.
