Established in 1846, this town was once named "Cotton Capital of the World." Now the seat of Hunt County, it is the center of rich agricultural region and a gateway to Lake Tawakoni. Audie Murphy, the nation's most decorated soldier of World War II, was born in a rural area a few miles north of Greenville.
Historic downtown revitalization efforts in Greenville have yielded new antique shops and boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, live music venues and a winery.
Historical sites include Majors Field, a WWII training base for many U.S. airmen and Mexican 201st Air Squadron, the only Mexican unit that saw active service. The 1895 Katy Depot houses the Greenville Railroad Museum.
