Del Rio bills itself as "The Best of the Border." It is the seat of Val Verde (green valley) County with more than 3,000 square miles. Abundant hunting is available for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, javelina, dove and quail. Enjoy fishing, boating and water sports on Amistad Reservoir. It is home to Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College.
With some 400 archaeological sites, the area is among the nation's richest in aboriginal cave paintings. See Amistad Recreation Area in this listing and Seminole Canyon State Park in LANGTRY.
Extending two miles along San Felipe Creek northeast of Del Rio in Val Verde County, the San Felipe Springs—the third largest springs in Texas—have a flow of approximately 90 million gallons of clear water daily. The springs were an important watering stop on the historic Chihuahua Road that connected the Texas port of Indianola with Chihuahua City, Mexico.
Del Rio's sister city, Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, is across the International Bridge.
