Comprised of eight cities at the mouth of the Brazos River, Brazosport communities are Clute , Freeport , Jones Creek , Lake Jackson , Oyster Creek , Quintana Beach , Richwood and Surfside Beach. Stephen F. Austin's original settlers, the "Old 300," first stepped off the schooner Lively at the mouth of the Brazos River here in 1821; thus, it's where modern Texas history began. Today, Brazosport is known for its beaches, nature sites, museums, sports and fishing.
Take a drive or walk on the 21-mile stretch of the drive-on beach. Swim in the surf, or just watch the seagulls and schools of fish. Recreational activities include freshwater and saltwater fishing, boating, surfing and crabbing. For deep-sea fishing, party and charter fishing vessels are for hire at several docks. RV facilities are available on or near the beach. Two 18-hole public golf courses are just minutes from the beach.
The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which stretches 1,066 miles from Brownsville to Carrabelle, Fla., passes through this area. The protected waterway was authorized in 1942 and completed in 1949. Surfside bridge on Texas 332 East spans the Intracoastal Waterway to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
