Established in 1872, the new Atlanta was named for the Georgia home of many early settlers. Sites of prehistoric Caddo villages have been noted in the region. The historic downtown plaza includes the Texas and Pacific Railroad Depot and Museum, Veterans Memorial Plaza and the Atlanta library.
Events include the Children's Independence Day Parade in July, Hoot N' Holler festival and 5K Glow Run in September, the Cullen Baker Country Fair in November, and Holiday Open House and Christmas Parade in December.
