Established in 1879 when the Texas Central Railroad crossed Hill County; named for Charles Whitney of New York, a major railroad stockholder. Now an agricultural/recreational center, gateway to popular Lakes Aquilla and Whitney, one of the leading water sport and lake resort areas of Texas. This lakeside resort town is near many RV parks and three golf courses. Also features famous Lake Whitney Motor-Cross Track, which attracts thousands of participants and spectators from all over the country to national races held each March.
