(Re-FURy-o) Founded 1834 at site of Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, relocated here from swamps of Calhoun County in 1795. Town today is seat of Refugio County, commercial center for oil-producing, ranching, farming region. Public parks offer picnicking, playgrounds, tennis courts and municipal swimming pool. Fishing and water sports on nearby coastal bays; hunters seek migratory waterfowl, deer, wild turkey and wild boar.
