Started as 3,500-acre plot of land in 1843 purchased by Solomon L. Leonard, years after his death his surviving heirs entered into agreement to establish town and railroad in 1880. Surrounding city are two historic thickets: Wildcat Thicket to the south and Bois D'arc Thicket to the north. Annual events include summer picnic and bluegrass festival.
