Region: Panhandle Plains
Established 1891, seat of Foard County, retail center for agricultural and oil production. In mid-1800s area was domain of Comanche Indians who figured in history's most famous case of a white girl captured and reared by Native Americans. The girl was Cynthia Ann Parker, taken by Indians in 1836, recaptured by white men in 1860. Recapture site, Pease River Battlefield marked by a historical marker, some nine miles northeast on F.M. 98. (For more on Cynthia Ann Parker story, see GROESBECK.)
RV hookups available near downtown, also bed & breakfasts and hunter's facilities. Annual events include Cynthia Ann Parker Days in May and Cowboy Christmas Ball in Dec.
